Requirements

  • A “qualified person” as defined in the Legal Profession Act
  • Preferably at least 7 years of relevant legal work, particularly in civil litigation and dispute resolution and/or criminal law
  • Strong legal competence/professionalism
  • Excellent judicial temperament, strong interpersonal & communication skills and a team player
  • Familiarity with the judicial work at the State Courts would be an advantage

As a Judicial Officer at the State Courts, you are expected to deal with the full range of judicial work across all four justice divisions:

(A) Criminal Justice Division

You will adjudicate on criminal trials in a demanding range of areas such as commercial crimes, crimes against persons and property, drug and other offences. You will decide on guilt and, where applicable, impose appropriate sentences on offenders. You will also have the chance to employ a problem-solving approach when dealing with offenders who are youthful or have mental conditions.

(B) Community Justice & Tribunals Division

You will use a judge-led approach to help resolve legal disputes. You will engage in pre-trial management for cases under the Protection from Harassment Act (“POHA”), Community Disputes Resolution Act (“CDRA”) and Employment Claims Act (“ECA”). You will adjudicate on cases under the Small Claims Tribunals Act, ECA, POHA and CDRA.

(C) Civil Justice Division

You will adjudicate on civil trials, hearing the full spectrum of civil disputes brought before the State Courts. You will also conduct judge-led case management conferences and assist parties to identify and narrow down issues and give directions for the expeditious conduct of proceedings. You will also adjudicate on interlocutory matters and hear applications for injunctive and other urgent reliefs.

(D) State Courts Centre for Dispute Resolution

You will manage civil claims and relational disputes to achieve fair, cost-effective and early resolution of cases without the need for a trial. Employing judge-driven case management strategies, you will assess the merits of parties’ cases and direct the negotiation process in the pre-trial management of the case. You will also conduct judicial mediation to facilitate win-win resolutions between parties.
